I used to walk several blocks home after school. I would carry my school locker key in the pocket of my jeans. But, one day the weather was cool, so I wore a jacket to school. I placed the key in the jacket pocket before walking home. Some time during the walk home, the key fell from the pocket of my jacket. I did not know that the key was gone until I got home. That is when I noticed there was a hole in the pocket of my jacket. The key had fallen out during the walk home. I was very upset and told my mother that I had lost the locker key. She did not scold me, but instead she had a spare locker key in her dresser. She used a rainbow-colored shoelace to hang the key from, so I could wear it like a necklace. I was very excited! This made me feel secure. I did not lose my locker key anymore.
Years and years later, after my mother had passed away, we were cleaning out her house. I found that key on the rainbow-colored shoelace. It brought back those memories of security, comfort and of my mother. A memory of when a key fell from the pocket…
