Today’s poem is a tough one. It, and the response I will post tomorrow, will remain one of my favorites of all time. I sincerely request your feedback.

If . . .
If you really loved me, lord,
You would take away the snort when I laugh.
You know how it embarrasses me.
If you really loved me, Lord,
You would have made my hair dark
Like coffee, not dirty dishwater.
If you really loved me, Lord,
You would not have left my lips so thin
Or my teeth so big.
My nose is crooked, Lord,
And my eyes squint too much.
Oh, I wish they were green.
If you knew me, like the Bible
Says you knew me, before
I was even born,
Then didn’t you know, Lord,
That I wanted to look like
The girl in my English class
With dark, coffee-colored hair,
Green eyes, and a full smile.
Not buck teeth and ugly.
If you really loved me.
